I provide individual counseling to adults (18+) in Fairbanks and across Alaska.
Hello, I’m Charissa Strope. I’ve been a licensed counselor in Alaska for over a decade. Initially, I worked in Sitka before transitioning to remote work in Fairbanks the last two years. My experience spans community behavioral health and Native Healthcare settings, but I recently transitioned to private practice. I'm excited to be offering in person counseling here in Fairbanks including EMDR therapy.
My approach to counseling is kind, compassionate and curious. I utilize an integrative approach meaning I draw from different counseling theories and techniques to tailor fit counseling to each clients unique needs. All of my approaches respect the mind/body connection which means we will address both our cognitive (mind) difficulties and also our physiological responses and triggers.
For example, if you struggle with anxiety we may work to recognize triggers, learn methods for dealing with thought spirals and anxious thoughts, and also practice skills for calming and coping with the physical symptoms of anxiety.
The modalities and theories I incorporate into my practice include:
- Polyvagal-informed interventions to support our nervous system.
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients develop self-acceptance and take committed actions toward their values.
- Mindfulness skills to enhance clients’ awareness and present-moment engagement.
- Trauma-focused therapies, such as ego state/“parts work” and Somatic Experiencing (SE), to address past traumas and their impact on the present.
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR) to facilitate the processing of traumatic memories.
I understand that initiating counseling can be intimidating. I’m here to support you throughout the process and answer all your questions. Call or text me today to get started. We’ll begin with an initial phone consultation call—this is mandatory before scheduling any services. If, after the consultation, we determine that I may not be the best fit for your needs, I’m more than happy to provide you with some provider recommendations.

In skiing as in biking, climbing, rafting and many activities, a “line” is the way/path/route a person chooses to take to move forward. Finding and taking your line, involves agency, choice, courage, preparation and movement – all of which resonate deeply with the work I do in counseling.
Agency – Loss, traumatic experiences, anxiety, illness, depression and many things can eat away at our sense of agency and connection to ourselves. My work in counseling is both to support the alleviation of suffering, as well as reinforce your connection to your innate worth and agency.
Choice – Similar to agency, making a choice involves trusting ourselves. It also involves understanding the terrain we are in, connecting with our goals, recognizing our strengths and honoring our needs. All of these are areas which are addressed in counseling.
Courage – Courage represents a sense of “okay-ness” large enough to move towards our goals. In counseling we will address the feelings, beliefs, reactions, behaviors, thoughts and past experiences that are keeping you feeling not-okay.
Preparation – An important part of my work is helping you learn and implement skills and techniques that work for YOU and where you are at now in your life. This is different for everyone and may include body-based exercises working to support your nervous system needs, as well as skills for managing difficulty thinking patterns and more.
Movement – This can be a hard one. Sometimes we feel stuck with no idea why. Together we will work to understand and recognize patterns of immobility and address the barriers keeping you there.
I admit, I was watching a ski movie with friends when “Find Your Line” struck me, what a fun way to stumble into inspiration! This experience suits my personality as a counselor. Counseling is both a professional and creative endeavor which is something I love about it! I enjoy supporting every client on their own unique path of healing and change.
If you would like to discuss working with me as your counselor, call today for a free 15-minute consultation. Individual therapy available in Fairbanks and through Telehealth. I look forward to hearing from you!

You have the right to receive a "Good Faith Estimate" explaining how much your medical care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give clients who don't have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical services. While this information is also outlined in my consent documentation that is signed by clients prior to treatment, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. Your provider should give you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least one business day before your service or item. You can also ask for a Good Faith Estimate prior to scheduling a service or item with a medical provider.
